1992: Opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Oriole Park at Camden Yards was constructed as the home of the MLB Baltimore Orioles and was a key part of the redesign and revitalization of the Inner Harbor section of Baltimore, Maryland.
Developed to incorporate an adjacent brick warehouse that was built at the turn of the 20th century, the ballpark was envisioned by Orioles then-president Larry Lucchino and Vice President Janet Marie Smith, who sought more traditional-looking venues but with modern and fan-friendly conveniences.
The trend defined the appearance and experience of ballpark design and nearby placemaking, especially in urban locations, for the better part of the next two decades; it also set the stage for leaders in the sports arena and politicians to work collaboratively.
